MULTI-TASK
In the past, a person who excelled as a multi tasker, was referred to as a "jack of all trades". Keep in mind this old title continued, a jack of all trades is also the master of none.
At the Bench

Ohia Block Plane. You will have pieces that seem perfect for something, keep them, stick'em in a box, just save them, at least for a month. I have re-handled most of my tools and I know it may be only in my head, but I swear my chisels are sharper and my saws cut straighter. These tools are the craft, these individual expressions are the heirloom. long after we are gone people will hold our tools and wonder about who we were, what we thought. The world is changing so fast, sometimes I worry that the future will not know I existed. |

| These are a couple of the tapering jigs I use in the chair and table laminations. The taper in the laminations is an extra step, but absolutely worth it. | One of the shop made glue jigs. I have literally dozens of chair jigs, all made from medex, due to the humidity here in Hawaii. |

| All the pieces for another chair laminated and ready to begin assembly. | Another take on the back slats, If I had one secret to share, it would be keep your sketches, keep them in a book, or keep them in a pile, It doesn't matter if they are completed. then once a month go back thru them some still won't make sense, maybe you'll be able to finish some. Maybe you just put them back in the basket like I do. But that basket represents our personal inspiration. |
| "I believe a mock up should contain as many of the design elements as possible. This mock-up is made from old pallets. A few more hours here prevents allot of headaches. Leave your mock -up where you can see it. After the initial excitement has worn off you will be begin to see the changes that must be made. An example in the chair seen here, is that the back rest seems to get heavier with time. So I sketch, threaten to cut it up for firewood, but at the end of the day I wait, and hope it will be clearer next monday." | |
Sometimes we have a unique problem ( this problem may only be in your head, but that's a different problem all together)that requires a specialized tool. Just make it, keep it simple, that way if it doesn't work your not really out anything and you have gained valuable experience. This shoulder plane is 5/8of an inch wide x 6 inches long. I would hope that I could design around the obvious problems that require solutions such as this shoulder plane. But unfortunately I get alittle exited when I begin milling. |
"I truly believe if you have a clear understanding as to the purpose that you wish to achieve with a tool, you can make it. And all it takes my friend, is alittle time." |
